Our Workshops

We offer workshops on indoor and outdoor cultivation techniques. These vary in length from an introductory workshop lasting 1.5 hours to more in depth sessions lasting a whole day.  All our workshops combine practical work with a  theoretical grounding in mycology and a discussion of the political context which necessitates building a radically new food system. All our workshops involve hands-on cultivation experience with participants taking mushroom blocks home to fruit, as well as printed resources to guide future cultivation experiments.

Mushroom Alchemy

How To Grow Oyster Mushrooms From Household Waste

Our flagship workshop teaches attendees how to grow mushrooms on household waste while offering a holistic and politically informed approach to mushroom cultivation, educating not only on the basics of mycology and home-scale DIY mushroom cultivation on waste, but holds space for discussions around food justice and transforming our broken food system.

Outdoor Workshops

Integrating Mushrooms Into Gardens and Small Farms

The outdoor cultivation workshop is lighter on theory as outdoor cultivation is more simple. It will focus more on the benefits mushrooms can bring to gardens and the various  ways in which they can be integrated into garden design. The practical element will look at how to cultivate a variety of species using different techniques, and participants will be able to take home a variety of media. Depending on the site topics covered could include:

  • A presentation on the mushroom lifecycle, fungal ecology and the benefits of integrating mushrooms into a garden design.

  • How to prepare a mushroom wood chip bed to grow wine cap (King Stropharia mushrooms)

  • How to companion plant Elm Oyster mushrooms with Brassicas

  • How to inoculate hardwood logs make rafts, log beds, totems and more!

  • How to grow oyster mushrooms in containers using agricultural waste streams such as straw.

  • How to prepare compost trays to grow Agaricus (button/chestnut) mushrooms

  • How to set up a Myco-vermi-composting system to transform your spent substrate into prime compost

Transformative Power of Mushrooms

Collaborating With Fungi to Build Resilience in Times of Crisis

In this workshop we consider how to work with our fungal allies in building resilience to the multiple and overlapping crises humanity faces today. Exploring the socio-political potential of a ‘radical mycology’ we will focus less on specific cultivation techniques, and spend most of our time considering how mushrooms can help us transform our food system from one that is based on total exploitation of land and labour to one that strengthens and nurtures our communities.

Participants will be given resources and spawn to try out mushroom growing at at home.
